Cats have a reputation for loving warm spots — sunbeams on the floor, the top of the fridge, that one patch of carpet that catches afternoon light. So it's easy to assume they're built for heat. They aren't. Cats are surprisingly bad at cooling themselves down, and when the temperature climbs, they can slide into heat stroke faster than most owners expect.
The tricky part with cats is that they hide distress. A dog in trouble pants, drools, and makes the situation obvious. A cat in trouble often just goes quiet, finds a corner, and stops moving. By the time the signs are unmistakable, things are already serious.
Heat stroke can damage a cat's brain, kidneys, liver, and heart. In bad cases it kills. The good news is it's preventable, and if you catch it early, treatable.
Cats don't sweat the way we do. They have a few sweat glands in their paw pads, and that's about it. Their main cooling tools are grooming — saliva evaporating off the fur — and, in extreme cases, panting. Panting in a cat is not normal background behavior the way it is in a dog. If your cat is panting, something is wrong until proven otherwise.
That limited cooling system gets overwhelmed quickly in hot or humid weather, especially indoors where airflow is poor. Indian summers are particularly brutal — high heat plus high humidity means even a shaded balcony or a closed room with no fan can become dangerous.
A normal cat's body temperature sits around 100.5–102.5°F. Once they push past 104°F, the body starts to struggle. Past 105–106°F, you're in heat stroke territory and organs begin to take damage.
Some cats are far more vulnerable than others:
If your cat falls into more than one of these categories, your margin for error is small.
It rarely comes from one dramatic event. The common scenarios are quieter than that:
Indoor cats aren't safe by default. A west-facing room with the curtains open and no airflow can easily climb past 35°C in a Mumbai or Delhi summer.
Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, so the early signs are subtle. Pay attention to:
The progression is usually: anxious and restless first, then quiet and weak, then unresponsive. If you see open-mouth breathing in a cat that hasn't just been chased around the house, treat it as serious.
Speed matters. Don't wait it out.
1. Move them somewhere cool. An air-conditioned room, a tiled bathroom floor, anywhere out of the heat. If the carrier is the problem, get them out of it.
2. Cool them gradually. Use cool — not cold — water on a cloth and dampen the fur on the belly, paws, ears, and underarms. A fan blowing across the damp fur helps a lot. Do not dunk a cat in cold water and do not use ice. Cats panic easily, and aggressive cooling can cause shock.
3. Offer water if they're alert. A shallow bowl, nothing forced. If they won't drink, don't push it.
4. Get to a vet. Even if they perk up. Heat stroke can cause delayed kidney and clotting problems that show up hours later, when it's much harder to treat.
If you have a thermometer and your cat tolerates it, a rectal temperature reading is genuinely useful for the vet. Anything above 104°F is an emergency.
The goal is steady, controlled cooling. Not shock therapy.
Don't try to manage these signs at home — drive:
Cool gently in the car on the way. Don't waste time trying to stabilize fully at home.
Expect IV fluids, oxygen support, continuous temperature monitoring, and bloodwork to check kidney function, liver enzymes, and clotting. If the cat is in shock or seizing, those get treated separately. The vet's job isn't only to bring the temperature down — it's to catch the delayed organ damage that heat stroke loves to cause, especially acute kidney injury, which is common in cats.
Hospitalization for 24–48 hours is normal in moderate to severe cases. Don't push back on it. The cat that "looks fine" the morning after can crash that evening.
Heat stroke in cats is overwhelmingly preventable. The basics:
Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad — most Indian cities deal with both high heat and high humidity for months at a stretch. Humidity makes cooling harder for cats because evaporation slows down. A 32°C day at 80% humidity is more dangerous to a cat than 36°C in dry heat. Power cuts during summer are the other quiet killer — a cat that's fine with the AC on can be in trouble within an hour of it cutting out. Keep at least one battery-backed fan running in the room your cat uses if outages are common in your area.
If your cat is panting, hiding in unusual places, drooling, or moving strangely on a hot day, don't wait to see if it passes. Cats don't show distress until they're well into it. By the time the signs are loud, the clock is already ticking.
Cool them gently, get them to a vet, and don't be talked out of going by a cat who suddenly seems okay. Heat stroke is one of those emergencies where the cat's stoic act works against them — the owner has to be the one paying attention.
A cool room, fresh water, and a watchful eye will prevent almost every case. The rest is knowing the signs and being willing to act fast when you see them.
